The Stormzy gig in Bournemouth sold out well in advance and was probably one of the most hotly anticipated shows of the year so far.
The vast majority of the crowd arrived early enough to catch the support who had them bouncing along and more than ready for what was to come. And what came was a hectic evening of dancing and singing from one of the most vocal crowds I have seen for a long time.
Grime is probably the most socially aware grassroots musical genre around at the moment and Stormzy is right at the forefront of the current scene.
He is riding the crest of a creative wave having released the album Gang Signs & Prayer that debuted at number one in the U.K. charts and is now hitting the road to cement his reputation as an excellent live performer.
The crowd did not stay still for the whole of the show and were joined by the man himself for a song spent in the pit.
I would normally highlight the biggest hits that would usually garner the biggest reaction but tonight every song was greeted with a roar of appreciation and a mass sing along to every word.
Of course he did play Shut Up, Scary, Big For Your Boots and Shape of You but to be honest every tune was delivered with and received with the same intensity both on and off the stage. The stage set up, sound and lighting were all excellent and added to a great evening.
Up to now this has been a genre that I have appreciated from a distance, but having seen the power of this live show I will definitely be back.
