The hip hop dance festival that is Breakin’ Convention hit the Mayflower theatre for the first time in its 14 years of touring last night.

The festival presented by artistic director Jonzi D brought together international and local hip hop dancers, rappers and DJs to teach, entertain and inspire.

Greeted in the foyer by freestyle dancers and rappers the energy continued into the theatre where hosts Jonzi D and Tencho0 introduced us to their world of 'no conventions'.

Local crew SHAKE opened the show in fantastic style. With a thought-provoking routine questioning the digital age and the loss of human contact.

B-Boy Finn, was up next with a master class in breaking, he didn’t hold back and considering he has only been breaking for 3 years it was astounding. SwagOut Revolutionz kept up the momentum with an artistic and humorous routine performed with flair. To end the first half South Africa’s innovative Soweto Skeleton Movers' took to the stage. Seven 7 was a wonderfully energetic, joyful routine mixed with gasp inducing bone breaking contortions, it had it all, pure entertainment.

The interval was the time for the audience and professionals to take to the floor and show their talent before the second half kicked off with more local talent by the name of Odyssey. The crew’s performance was highly emotive you could feel with every move the fear and anger they were depicting.

Dance duo Tentacle Tribe were just breath taking, their contemporary twist using conceptual Hip hop had the audience spell bound. This stunning performance was totally unexpected and gave credence to the festivals ethos.

As finales go Just Dance, South Korea’s best b-boys, hit the spot. Combining tradition beats with contemporary moves the display of tricks, turns flips and the longest spin I’ve every seen, it was all just stunning.

Hip Hop has many avenues and the Breakin’ Convention festival is a fantastic forum to have fun, experiment, learn, to be inspired and best all to dance.
