THE 2017 National Theatre Live Season of screenings at the Regent in Christchurch, continues with Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf (12A) from the stage of the Harold Pinter Theatre in London on Sunday, May 28 at 7pm.

Imelda Staunton joins Conleth Hill in James Macdonald’s critically acclaimed, five star production of Edward Albee’s 1962 landmark play.

In the early hours of the morning on the campus of an American college, Martha, played by Imelda Staunton, much to her husband George’s displeasure, has invited the new professor and his wife to their home for some after-party drinks. As the alcohol flows and dawn approaches, the young couple are drawn into George and Martha’s toxic games until the evening reaches its climax in a moment of devastating truth-telling.

Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf won the Tony Award for Best Play in 1963 before being memorably filmed in 1966 by director, Mike Nichols and starring Elizabeth Taylor as Martha and Richard Burton as George with Sandy Dennis and George Segal.

The film won five Oscars including Best Actress for Elizabeth Taylor and Best Supporting Actress for Sandy Dennis.
