AROUND 60 firefighters were called to deal with a heath fire on Ministry of Defence land near Wareham today.

The fire, which destroyed around two hectares of heathland, started at West Holme on land that is part of Lulworth Ranges.

Dorset Fire and Rescue Service (DFRS) confirmed 10 fire engines and four Land Rovers attended the scene, after they were alerted at 11.50am.

Crews used hose reels and beaters to extinguish the fire, which a DFRS spokesman confirmed had been surrounded by1.45pm.

The DFRS spokesman said yesterday: “We had around 60 firefighters out there because the fire was spreading quite rapidly. That’s why we needed that amount of resources.

“We will be looking at sending relief crews to the area at 5pm, so we will have a presence there for some time.”

The cause of the fire is yet to be determined.
