If you thought you could leave the heating switched off until October, you may be in for a surprise this week.

Things are set to turn chilly at night thanks to some cold air arriving from the north.

While it will be settled and dry all week, the temperatures are set to take a tumble in the evening.

Today will be cloudy with highs of 12C, while Tuesday will see sunny spells all day but it will feel no warmer than 1C at 7am.

Wednesday will see sunny spells but again it will feel chilly for the morning rush-hour with a 'feels-like' of just 0C.

Thursday will again be sunny with highs of 11C.

Friday will see more in the way of cloud but it will be warmer with a high of 14C.

Looking ahead, the Met Office says: "Towards next weekend there'll be a lot of fine and settled weather, especially in the south-west.

"The northwest will be cloudier though, with outbreaks of rain.

"Over next weekend and much of the following week, northern and eastern areas may often see a mixture of sunshine and showers, possibly wintry, especially in the north, these areas could also see some prolonged rain.

"There'll also be the risk of gales in the far northeast.

"Further south and west, it should be drier and brighter generally. Settled conditions may spread to most parts by the end of the period.

"Although it may turn warmer in the south at first, it'll then become mostly rather cold, with the risk of overnight frost.

"Despite this, in any prolonged sunshine, it should feel pleasantly warm."
