The coastguard was called to Man O' War beach, west of Lulworth, at 6pm on Saturday.
The man, believed to be in his 30s, fell in an "inaccessible location", according to a spokesperson from the Maritime and Coastguard Agency.
"The Lulworth Coastguard Rescue Team extracted the fallen walker, and he was taken to Southampton General Hospital by the helicopter from Portland."
She added: "Where the casualty fell was in an inaccessible location so a land ambulance was unable to get to him."
It is not believed the casualty fell from the cliff, but from steps leading down to the beach.
He is not thought to be in a life-threatening condition.
