DORSET could see snow this weekend, the Met Office has warned.

A yellow alert – meaning be aware – has been issued for Bournemouth, Poole and the rest of the county and is valid from 12.05am on Sunday until just before midnight.

The Met Office says snow showers are “likely” throughout Sunday and where snow accumulates, there could be between 2 and 5cms of snow in places.

It says there is a small chance of travel delays on the roads with “some stranded vehicles, along with delayed or cancelled rail and air travel.”

There is also a small chance that power cuts may occur and mobile phone services may be affected.

According to the current Met Office forecast, there is a chance of snow on Saturday around 9pm until Sunday morning.

It could feel as cold as -9C.

The cold snap will be caused by cold air coming in from the east.

Nicola Maxey, a spokesperson for the Met Office, said the cold spell would be “short-lived” and will be nothing like the conditions seen earlier this month when snow blanketed Dorset and caused wide-spread disruption across the county.

“This week we’ll see temperatures of around 10C in Dorset but by Sunday it will be 2C or 3C.”

She added: “There is still quite a lot of uncertainty as we go into the end of the month.

“Normally weather systems come from the Atlantic, but looking ahead there is an indication that rather than the air from the east, we may go back to these changeable patterns with milder air and some rain.

“Statistically you’re more likely to see snow in March in the UK than December."
