THE search has begun to find Dorset’s Best Village for 2018.

The annual competition organised by Dorset Community Action (DCA) has been running for more than 30 years.

Entry details have been sent inviting villages to enter either through the parish council, village hall committee and other active community groups.

Magna Housing has been the main sponsor for the competition since 2010 and has continued its support for another year.

Competition organiser Rita Burden said: “Villages are the lifeblood of our county and the purpose of this competition is to encourage these communities to come together for the benefit of their local area and allowing their efforts to be recognized and rewarded.

Best Small Village 2017 was the West Dorset village Puncknowle, with the Best Large Village award going to Iwerne Minster in North Dorset.

Besides the main Best Village competition, there are five other entry categories: The People’s Project, Environmental Champions, Best Village Shop, Young People’s Award and Dorset Community Heritage Award.

The Dorset Community Heritage Award is new for this year and will celebrate one-off projects that have benefitted the local community.

The deadline for entries in the Best Village category only is 5pm on Monday, April 16. For all other categories the deadline is 5pm on Monday, June 18.
