THESE pictures marked a big year in the history of Poole carnival.

But the procession, which took place on August 20, 1983, wasn't important for its numbers. In fact, troupes of young majorettes outnumbered the five floats.

Its true significance was in the fact it was the first carnival parade since 1978 when a dispute was sparked between those who had helped at the event.

Leading the procession was Poole's town crier Malcolm Squire, followed by Society of Poole Men stalwart John Barnham.

Behind them came the Christchurch and District Marching Youth Band and Poole's carnival queen Lisa Winder in a replica vintage car.
