BCP Council has installed new totems at Steamer Point to 'shine a light' on the area's heritage and natural beauty.

Three new totems have been installed at the nature reserve aiming to inform and engage residents and visitors about the area's history and wildlife.

The totems explain the story of nationally important military research and development work into radar, communications, night vision and much more from 1939 to 1980 alongside its links to Highcliffe Castle.

Established in 1939, the Air Defence Experimental Establishment (ADEE) had sites at both Steamer Point and Somerley and made significant technological advancements in military radars, optical and audio audio system for detection of tracking of air, land and sea-based targets.

Although ADEE moved to Malvern, near Worcester, due to security concerns, the site was taken over by the Signals Research and Development Establishment which was based by Steamer Point until 1980.

The project was a collaborative effort between BCP Council, local councillors and residents in Friars Cliff.

Alongside the totems, a series of wayfinding markers guide visitors on an informative woodland walk to provide insights into the nature in Steamer Point nature reserve.

BCP Council hopes the intertwining of history and nature will create a 'multifaceted experience'.
