REMIXED presents DJ Billy Daniel Bunter on Saturday at Bomo Bunker. Ben Ricci provides the following preview of what clubbers can expect...

Bournemouth’s clubbing legacy during the early 1990s arguably began with Remix, formerly Kev’s House. A small basement club renowned for its intense heat from young clubbers frenetically dancing, its impeccable bass-shaking Funktion-One sound system and condensation dripping from the low ceilings onto the dance floor; Remix was an old skool institution like no other.

Back then, the dance music was rave and happy hardcore. It was fresh, energetic and unapologetically underground. I absolutely loved it and have cherished memories of spending much of my youth jumping around like a madman along with my fellow teenage peers.

Remix kick-started Bournemouth’s clubbing scene with big name DJs appearing, week in week out. It was, for many, the home of old skool with glow sticks, whistles and white gloves-a-plenty. It was a lot of fun and we knew at the time we were part of something special. A new culture was born and Remix was centre stage, leading the way and attracting crowds from all over the south coast and beyond.

Nostalgically, it’s hard to imagine that when Remix was in its heyday, you couldn’t buy dance music on the high street. There was no Internet, no smartphones, no social media, streaming or downloading. Dance music was not played on the radio in pubs or bars and it didn’t feature on TV. If you were into the rave scene, you could only buy cassettes of DJ sets recorded from the big name parties at the time like Fantazia, Vision or Dreamscape, on sale from clothing shops like M2, Metropolis or the odd rare record shop. For the majority, if you wanted to hear your favourite DJ play the music you loved, you went to a club and experienced their set first hand in all of its glory. Clubbing today is a far cry from the good old days of undisputed no-holds-bard happy hardcore hedonism.

Sadly, Remix shut its doors in the mid nineties, but during autumn last year, a bunch of clever chaps decided Remix would return to its home on Holdenhurst Road in Lansdowne, now called Bomo Bunker.

Today’s Remixed parties attract an older crowd who really appreciate the music and relive early 90s club culture. Some might say ironically they are geriatric ravers who are keen to relive their childhood till the early hours. I think, at 42, myself is included. I’m actually pretty proud to still enjoy dance music and take a trip down memory lane and party like we used to.

This Saturday’s Remixed party presents happy hardcore and rave aficionado DJ Billy Daniel Bunter with support from Stormski, Bobski, DJ Junk, DJ Dream, Sy-Klone & Crease (Outkastz), Max MC, MC Casper and Clark’e. It will be a night filled with jungle, acid house and rave favourites.

Headliner Billy Daniel Bunter is one of the most influential DJs in the old skool, happy hardcore and rave scene and will be a special treat for Bournemouth’s more mature clubbing fraternity.

Since the tender age of fifteen at rave Labyrinth, Billy Daniel Bunter has been playing his unique intense, kinetic style to crowds that number in the thousands. During his 27-year DJ and producer career, he has DJ’d at the cream of the crop of old skool dance music events including World Dance, Dreamscape, Helter Skelter, Raindance, Slammin Vinyl, United Dance, Moondance, Fantazia and Hardcore Heaven to name but a few.

Since 1991, Billy Daniel Bunter has been a stalwart of the scene playing breaks, old skool, happy hardcore, rave and drum’n’bass. A gold selling artist for Ministry of Sound, his production and remix credits include Prodigy, Slipmatt, Force and Styles, Freddie le Grand, Ragga Twins, Krome and Time, Ramos & Supreme, Guru Josh and Technotronic. With over ten mix CDs under his belt, numerous breakthrough vinyl releases and featuring in the top ten compilation chart and top ten album charts on iTunes, he is one of the hardest working players in the industry.

He has also DJ’s on some of the most-loved pirate radio stations of the early 90s and presented on Sky TV. In addition, Billy Daniel Bunter has curated his own brand of rave culture arts events and been instrumental in commissioning several rave autobiographies. On top of that, he presents a weekly show on London’s highly respected Kool FM and is head honcho of his record label Music Mondays.

Expect a two-hour vinyl set from Billy Daniel Bunter crammed with rare, hard to find cuts and not a cheesy anthem in sight. If you love old skool rave, this Saturday’s Remixed party is not to be missed.

The party starts at 9pm and goes through until 4am. Advanced tickets are £8 plus booking fee and are available from Skiddle:
