THERE is an early New Year’s Eve treat at the Regent in Christchurch at 4pm on Tuesday December 31, when there is a twilight, Live Broadcast screening from the Berlin Philharmonie.

This is a chance to celebrate the conclusion to 2019 in style with the Berliner Philharmoniker’s glittering New Year’s Eve Concert.

This fantastic event will be conducted by Chief Conductor Kirill Petrenko and features a lively American programme of music with the star soprano, Diana Damrau, as guest soloist.

Broadcast live from Berlin, there are sure to be fireworks as the orchestra takes the audience on a journey through George Gershwin’s An American in Paris and Leonard Bernstein’s Symphonic Dances from West Side Story as well as works from Harold Arlen, Rodgers & Hammerstein, Stephen Sondheim and Kurt Weill.

The Berlin Philharmonic is a German orchestra based in Berlin. It is traditionally ranked in the top handful of orchestras in the world, distinguished amongst peers for its virtuosity and compelling sound.

The orchestra’s history has always been tied to its chief conductors, many of whom have been authoritative and controversial characters, such as Wilhelm Furtwängler and Herbert von Karajan.

Kirill Garrievich Petrenko is a Russian-Austrian conductor. He is currently general music director of Bavarian State Opera and chief conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic.

Petrenko made his conducting debut in opera in 1995 in Vorarlberg with a production of Benjamin Britten’s Let’s Make an Opera. He was a Kapellmeister at the Vienna Volksoper from 1997 to 1999. From 1999 to 2002, he was Generalmusikdirektor of the Südthüringisches Staatstheater, Das Meininger Theater (Meiningen, Germany).

Petrenko was Generalmusikdirektor of the Komische Oper Berlin from 2002 to 2007. During this period, he made his debut with the Bavarian State Opera in 2003.

Petrenko first guest-conducted the Berlin Philharmonic in 2006, and became chief conductor in August of this year.

The Live Broadcast from the Berlin Philharmonie will run for two hours.
