A PENSIONER killed a biker as he attempted to drive into the grounds of a country house hotel.

Maurice Reynolds, 88, was behind the wheel of his silver Honda Jazz on the morning of July 3 2018 when the collision happened outside the now-closed East Close Hotel in Hinton.

Biker Stefan Konstanty, who lived in Grand Avenue, Southbourne, was riding his black Honda CVR motorcycle along the A35 Lyndhurst Road when Reynolds turned.

The motorbike hit the car’s bonnet and Mr Konstanty, 64, was thrown through the air, landing on the road.

Despite the efforts of paramedics and police, he died at the scene.

On Tuesday, Reynolds appeared at Southampton Magistrates’ Court, where he admitted a charge of causing death by careless driving.

The defendant, a retired operations manager who worked at Esso’s refinery for more than 30 years, had been driving towards Lyndhurst at around 10am.

Mr Konstanty was riding in the opposite direction, towards Christchurch.

Prosecutor Ryan Seneviratne told the court the biker hit the front of Reynold’s Honda on the passenger side. Farm labourers working near the road rushed to his aid and gave him CPR until paramedics arrived.

However, Mr Konstanty was fatally injured.

Reynolds also suffered serious injuries to his head. He has been left partially deaf as a result of the collision.

In mitigation, Levent Kemal told magistrates that Reynolds had voluntarily given up his “unblemished” driving licence, which he had previously held for more than 50 years.

“To make it abundantly clear, he has no intention of driving a motor vehicle ever again. It’s evidence of his remorse,” Mr Kemal said.

Reynolds has relived the crash “every day” since it happened, the court heard.

Mr Kemal asked magistrates not to impose a community order or a curfew on the grounds that it would be “inappropriate” for the elderly defendant.

Magistrates agreed and Reynolds, of Preston Way, Christchurch, was fined £2,500 for the “absolutely tragic” collision.

The defendant was also ordered to pay a £170 surcharge and £85 court costs and banned from driving for a decade.
