THE jury in the trial of a man accused of causing a husband and father’s death in a head-on crash have heard closing comments from the prosecution.

Adrian Wojciechowski, 29, denies a charge of death by dangerous driving after his BMW collided with David Grant-Jones’s Land Rover Freelander on the A35 Puddletown Bypass, at the point where the road narrows into a single carriageway.

Wojciechowski also denies causing serious injury by dangerous driving to Mr Grant-Jones’s wife Heather, as well as his two passengers Lukasz Mleczek and Pawel Arnista, in the crash on July 14, 2018.

Summing up the prosecution’s case following a week-long trial, Simon Jones said to the jury: “This was a fast-moving situation. David Grant-Jones tragically died at the scene from the injuries he received.

"Adrian Wojciechowski’s white BMW went into Mr Grant-Jones’s car head on, and we know that Mr Grant-Jones was driving at 53 or 54mph. He had no chance.

“What led to Mr Wojciechowski’s dangerous decision was high speed, speeds which you have heard from witnesses reached around 100mph.

“Mr Wojciechowski isn’t here, but when he was fit for interview, when he had an opportunity to answer questions and give his account what did he say? He said nothing.

“I urge you to provide justice and return guilty verdicts on all charges Mr Wojciechowski faces.”

No representation was made on behalf of Wojciechowski, who has been absent from court for the entire trial.

Jurors were instructed to find Thomas Russell, 39, not guilty on one count of death by dangerous driving, three counts of serious injury by dangerous driving and a further count of death by careless driving, after the prosecution dropped its allegation that Russell and Wojciechowski had been ‘racing’ shortly before the incident and were jointly culpable for Mr Grant-Jones’s death.

For legal reasons the jury were discharged from reaching a verdict on a further charge of dangerous driving faced by Russell. He will face a re-trial at a later date.

The trial continues today.
