OUR major political parties seem to assume that we, the electorate, are not only gullible but innumerate.
Both Conservatives and Labour are promising huge increases in public expenditure. This can only come from increased taxes or further borrowing.
The current level of national debt is approximately £20,000 per head of population. If manifesto promises are to be honoured, we have the choice of paying significantly more tax right across the spectrum or (under Labour promises) doubling the level of national debt.
Surely we do not want to inflict that on the next generations. Why can't our politicians credit us with intelligence and be honest about the implications of their policies?
