A DORSET tip was closed earlier today after a 'tank shell' was found on the site.

Police set up a 50-metre cordon around the W&S Recycling premises in Westminster Road, Wareham, while the incident was dealt.

The tip was closed during this period but has now reopened.

A Dorset Police spokeswoman said: "Dorset Police was called at 11.13am on Thursday, February 6, to a report of a possible tank shell found at W&S Recycling on Westminster Road in Wareham.

"The recycling centre was closed and a 50-metre cordon was in place.

"Officers are working with the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team. The EOD team will remove the device to dispose of it safely."

Dorset Council initially said the household recycling centre was closed for the rest of the day "due to unforeseen circumstances".

However, a council spokesperson later confirmed the site had re-opened.
