A yellow weather alert of snow and ice is in place for Wales over the next 24 hours.

The Met Office said 1cm to 3cm of snow is expected to fall overnight, while higher areas in Wales, northwest England and west Scotland could see up to 8cm.

Meteorologists say wintry showers and icy stretches are likely to bring some travel disruption from 8pm on Tuesday to 10am on Wednesday.

The Met Office said: "Wintry showers are expected to continue through Tuesday night and Wednesday morning leaving surfaces wet and leading to icy stretches developing on untreated surfaces. These showers will fall as a mixture of rain, hail and snow at times, the snow mostly over higher ground.

They added: "Some places are likely to see one to three centimetres of snow, mainly above 200 metres, with four to eight centimetres possible over the higher ground in northwest England, Wales and west Scotland."
