A HUGE search was launched near Old Harry Rocks on Tuesday (May 5) evening after a distress signal was received by coastguards.

Royal Navy ship HMS Tyne, a coastguard helicopter, Solent coastguard and Swanage RNLI lifeboat all made their way to the area just after 6pm.

A search was carried out to establish where the personal locator beacon had come from.

An RNLI Swanage spokesman said: "Once on scene the lifeboat conducted an expanding square search looking for a possible person in the water or something that would explain the beacon signal. An hour after launch further information was received from the oastguard that the beacon was now believed to be ashore so all units were stood down.

The Swanage crew launched just after 6.15pm.
