SWANAGE Coastguard volunteers were called to carry out a search of Old Harry Rocks following reports of an orange handheld flare near Ballard Point.

The all-weather lifeboat was launched on February 5 at 9.22pm and headed towards Ballard point to begin the search.

As visibility was very clear, the inshore lifeboat was requested to assist in the search, starting at the southern end of Swanage Bay.

The ALB continued searching from Old Harry Rocks to the harbour entrance while the ILB focused on searching inshore around Studland Bay.

Nothing was found by either parties.

The two lifeboats later positioned themselves off Old Harry Rocks and fired illuminating flares.

This was repeated at Ballard Point.

Once again nothing was found and the search was called off.
