DORCHESTER Sports registered their seventh successive Jewson Dorset Premier League victory with a late 2-1 win at Bournemouth Sports.

Fresh from the confidence gained by a 1-0 derby triumph over Balti Sports, Ashley James’ men were not at their best but still managed to squeeze three points from their contest at Chapel Gate.

It means the Avenue Stadium-based club is sitting pretty in second, keeping the pressure on leaders Hamworthy Rec.

Both teams are level on 40 points but Rec boast a resoundingly better goal difference – 66 to 24 – and have two games in hand.

Dorchester Sports began the strongest and nearly scored in the first minute when Alex Godfrey charged down an attempted clearance from home keeper Louis Cruttenden, only to see the ball bobble wide.

Godfrey would have his goal on 15 minutes, finishing off a squared pass to beat Cruttenden.

The visitors nearly had a second but for the heroics of Cruttenden, who tipped a Godfrey effort round the post.

Bournemouth Sports showed their mettle in the second half as top-scorer Jack Voisey hit the bar before Jamie Symes scored an own goal, heading a cross past emergency keeper Shaun Bessant.

Voisey then clattered the post with another near miss and Ethan Fishlock rippled the side netting as the hosts continued to push.

However, it was the away side that bagged all three points as Bailey McNamara popped up in the 89th minute to head Charlie Gosney’s perfect cross beyond Cruttenden.

Speaking to Echosport, James said: “It was a bit touch and go. Confidence is high and we don’t give up until the final seconds.

“We got the last-minute winner when I must admit it looked like they were going to end up winning the game.

“We got the goal at the end and it keeps us up there, keeps it interesting.

“The performance was unbelievable. It was backs to the walls considering we had nine out with no goalkeeper and a subs bench which wasn’t fit.

“To even get a team to go there was something of a miracle. We ended up battling for each other. It was brilliant to see and to come away with three points was a great feeling. It just proves how good the squad is.”

James’ men next host Blandford United in the Dorset Senior Trophy on Saturday (1.30pm).

Dorchester Sports: Bessant, J Steele, Tennant, Hankin (Gosney 80), Amor, Symes, Brumble, Voss, O Peart (McNamara 60), Godfrey, Crossin (Quinton 60).
