SWANAGE Town & Herston suffered a 3-1 New Year’s Day defeat against Purbeck rivals Corfe Castle at The Fortress.

The derby contest exploded into action with two goals in the first four minutes, Jamal Baxter scoring for the hosts with a header at the near post from a corner and Tom Chapman replying for Swans following a corner from Jake Streams.

Swans stopper Ben Hodder made a superb save from Corfe's Jack Craig when clean through and Corfe keeper Jakub Lewiarz pulled off a great save to deny Charlie Brassington before the break.

The second half turned into a feisty affair with plenty of tackles flying in on a difficult pitch.

The industrious George Sparrow went close with a good shot, then Swans lost Taylor Hibbs through injury.

Corfe then took the lead through Craig with a cool finish, leaving stopper Hodder helpless.

Two minutes later the hosts secured the points and bragging rights following a good finish from substitute Josh Lee on the counter-attack.

Defeat left Swans 13th in the league table, having accumulated 18 points from their opening 20 league contests.

Corfe’s victory was just their second in the division all season, they do however remain bottom of the pile – two points adrift of rivals Wareham Rangers.

Next up for Corfe is an away clash at Bridport reserves in the quarter final for the Dorset Senior Trophy on Saturday.
