THE council will NOT be implementing a 20mph speed limit in Queens Park Avenue in Bournemouth, despite a petition reaching more than 1,000 signatures.

Resident on the street Stephen told the Echo earlier this week he feared that “one day a child will be killed” unless the council scrap the 30mph limit in the road.

Drivers have been caught speeding at speeds of nearly 70mph on the road and there has been cars crashing into lampposts and walls after losing control.

Cllr Mike Greene, portfolio holder for sustainability and transport, said that “every location has potential for accidents, so it is important to prioritise where interventions should take place” in changing speed limits.

He added: “During the last five years, there have only been two minor collisions in this section of Queens Park Avenue, neither with any casualties.

“This puts it a long way down the list and therefore there are no plans for a 20mph limit on this road.

“We examine all sites where safety concerns have been raised by members of the public, and we have been in contact with the same resident a number of times over several years about Queens Park Avenue in Bournemouth.

“The safety of both our motorists and our residents is a top priority for the council, so we will of course continue to monitor this site alongside the rest of our network.”
