POLICE officers have issued a warning over a 'gang working the streets'.

It comes after Purbeck Police "stopped a man begging" on Station Street, Swanage with officers saying they "must remind (people) that begging is an offence".

Purbeck Police said they were aware of a 'gang' that "empty their money pots regularly to give the impression that they aren't being given money and hide food that is given to them under the blankets they have.".

A spokesperson for Purbeck Police said: "Please be aware there is a gang working the streets and, whilst you may be compelled to be generous, we must remind you that begging is an offence.

"Vulnerable individuals are identified and signposted to the relevant safeguarding agencies where they can receive the correct assistance."
