BOURNEMOUTH Airport has warned a new waste facility proposed to be built in Poole could compromise aviation safety.

The airport has written a formal letter of objection to BCP Council over MVV Environment’s proposal to build a new incinerator called an energy from waste combined heat and power facility.

The company, which specialises in waste management and renewable energy generation, is looking to take on 260,000 tonnes of waste each year with the new site, just off Magna Road, Poole

However, Bournemouth Airport fears the proposals could “conflict with safeguarding criteria” and it objected “on the grounds of aviation safety” which could be caused by emissions from the chimney.

Ian Ashby, airfield safety and compliance officer at Bournemouth Airport, said: “Whilst BIAL formally objects to the planning application, it is in discussions with MVVUK and hopes to find a satisfactory solution for both parties.

“Once this is agreed, we will remove our objection.”

Meanwhile, residents also objected to the plans submitted last month, with many referencing the existing Canford Resource Park having a 'negative impact'.

Anna Zeller-Korolewska said: “The existing site already has a negative impact on the quality of living as during the waste burning process it releases a strong odour which is very unpleasant and it attracts common green bottle flies that feed on dead organic tissue and faeces."

Adam Horvath-Juhasz added: “This forces us to stay inside our homes with the window closed, instead of enjoying the outside space.

“This will be not just an eyesore on the local heath and green land, but more importantly an incinerator that will need feeding, pollute our air and constantly generate odours turning our lovely area into a dump.

“If it is an absolute must, why can't this be built in the middle of nowhere in Dorset, rather than close to a residential area?”

A spokeswoman for MVV said discussions are ongoing with the airport to ensure there are no safety issues caused by the chimney.

She added: “We would like to reassure the local community that modern energy from waste facilities are designed to minimise any adverse effects such as odour.

“All waste facilities are strictly regulated by the Environment Agency and efficient flue gas cleaning systems ensure that emissions from the chimney are within safe limits.

“We would welcome anyone who is interested, or has concerns, to visit our operational facility in Plymouth, which is around 60 metres from the closest housing.

“Here we have demonstrated that we can safely and considerately operate in the heart of a community. Our recent open day attracted nearly 2000 visitors, with over 600 of them taking a tour of the facility to understand how it works.”
