A BOURNEMOUTH fire station will be swapping their hoses for sponges at a fundraising event later this month.

Redhill Park Fire Station is holding a car wash event, bake sale, and coffee morning in aid of three vital charities.

One of the charities is Brain Research UK, in aid of Becky Sharp.

Becky was involved in a hit-and-run by a drunken driver last year which led to eight weeks in a coma and life-altering injuries.

At the time of the incident, Becky was walking her baby daughter by Redhill Fire Station before pushing the pram out of harm's way.

Becky was left needing to use a wheelchair during her recovery and requires long-term medical care.

A second chosen charity is Alfie’s Wish Charity.

This provides children with cancer aged 0-16 years old in England and Wales with a day out or experience to a destination in the UK to make memories with their families.

It was set up in memory of Alfie Butler, who lost his battle with brain cancer when he was five years old.

Michelle Pattison, whose husband Jon is a firefighter at Redhill Park, is running the London Marathon this year to raise funds for the charity, having taught Alfie in reception at primary school.

The third and final charity is the Fire Fighters Charity which provides support to all serving and retired firefighters.

Firefighter Janine McCumiskey, one of the event organisers, said: “It’s been some time since we last held a car wash, and we’ve added on the coffee morning and bake sale to maximise how much we can raise for these three good causes.

“Some of our firefighters helped to care for Becky when the crash happened, so we’re delighted that she and her family are hoping to join us on the day.”

The event takes place at Redhill Park Fire Station between 10am and 3pm on April 13.
