ONE of the oldest pubs in Poole branded a ‘hub of the community’- The Bricklayers is our pub of the week.

Established in 1833, The Bricklayers was initially built for the builders of St Peter's Church, opposite the pub.

Now, it is owned by Andy Watts and Janice Crump, who bought the venue in 2018.

They aim to give The Bricklayers a ‘new lease of life’ and welcome guests of all ages.

Andy said: “We are a community led pub with something for everyone.

“When we bought the pub, it was already renowned as a popular live music venue.

“Since we opened, it’s just got busier and busier, and there is an amazing buzz.”

Andy and Janice have just completed the renovation of the restaurant area, turning it into a lush green oasis, complete with cosy new seating and an abundance of plants.

Changes to the pub also include a new menu consisting of ‘traditional pub classics done well.’

The Bricklayers has a plethora of events for people of all ages, including live music nights, acoustic evenings, food nights, quiz nights and a wide selection of board games.

Andy said: “We are so popular because we cater for everyone, we don’t push towards one age group, and I think there is a really good mix of all.

“What has really surprised me is how the age groups have changed over the years. I have noticed so many more young people coming here in their friendship groups.

“I think young people feel safer in a community pub, and since Covid, people have really embraced being able to have a conversation where they don’t have to shout.”

The Bricklayers has a large outside garden that has covers and heaters so people can sit outside whatever the weather.

During the summer, there is an outdoor barbecue and upper garden area that can be used as a private function area.

There is a range of local ales, beer, ciders, and copious choices of gins, spirits, cocktails and mocktails.

The Bricklayers pub also puts on the Grooves on the Green festival, which is ‘three days of non-stop entertainment’. Street food and family entertainment are hosted on Ashley Cross Green.

This year, the event takes place June 22 and June 23 and will feature a host of artists and tribute acts, including Queen and The Killers.
