I WAS interested to read the letter from your anonymous correspondent re the “Brexit” vote.

I too share his concern about the gross inequalities in our society, but after listening to all the arguments, and trying to sort out the facts from the lies and half-truths peddled by both camps, like 17 million others I voted to leave.

I am sure that a small minority were motivated by xenophobia, just as some remain supporters were motivated by nothing more than a nebulous notion of “wanting to feel European”, but I am equally sure that most people carefully considered the pros and cons.

After the break-up of the Soviet Union we rejoiced that so many smaller countries regained their independence and took charge of their own destinies.

Why then are we so keen to remain in what is destined to become a European superstate?
