PAUL Best’s hat-trick proved not enough as Swanage Town & Herston were scuppered 4-3 in their Dorset Premier League opener against Shaftesbury Town reserves.

Best was the star of the show for the hosts at Day’s Park but a sluggish start meant they began their campaign with defeat.

Swans gifted the visitors a dream opening when they conceded three sloppy goals in the first 13 minutes.

Shaftesbury’s Aaron Lane-Leney netted twice along with Aidan Shepherd – as the Rockies took command from the outset.

Skipper Best reduced the arrears after 23 minutes, however the comeback was short-lived when the visitors regained their three-goal advantage through Shepherd.

He netted his second to make it 4-2 before the interval.

Swans started the second half brightly and began to create chances.

After 71 minutes, Best reduced the deficit by producing the final touch in a goalmouth scramble following good work from Scott Dando.

Shaftesbury stopper Dave Cull then produced fine saves to thwart Elliot Parslow and Best.

But with two minutes remaining captain Best completed his hat-trick by firing home from inside the box.

In the final minute, striker Frankie White had a great chance to salvage a point for the hosts but narrowly shot over.

n In cricket, Swanage defended their total of 238 for seven to overcome Compton House by 44 runs in Dorset Division One.
