SAM Whaley was pleased to see his season finale end in success after defending his crown at the National and Open Laser Championship.

The Swanage sailing star won five of his nine races over six days of competition at Largs Sailing club to claim the spoils.

And Whaley admitted it was the perfect way to set up a winter where he will be hard at work.

He said: “It has been another tough year on the Olympic sailing circuit but I am happy to close the season off by winning the nationals again.

“This sets me up quite nicely heading into winter training.

“With the next Laser world championships being in Australia in February 2020, my aim over the next few months is to solidify my performance and ensure I am in a good place on and off the water ready for the big trip to the worlds.

“It’s going to be a challenging time but one I am looking forward to very much.”
