TABLE-TOPPING Wimborne Town gave a four-figure crowd plenty to shout about as they ended 2023 with a convincing 4-0 win over Bashley.

An attendance of 1,229 was recorded at New Cuthbury, the most ever for a league fixture at the ground, and saw goals from Sam Jackson, Billy Walker, Ben Scorey and Sam Griffin.

Tim Sills’s men sit top of Southern League Division One South, three points clear of nearest challengers Cribbs.

Bashley, struggling near the wrong end of the division, made the brighter start, before Wimborne worked their way into the contest.

And the hosts took the lead just before the half-hour mark, Harry Morgan getting to the byline before picking out Jackson to score.

Walker soon doubled the advantage, latching onto a loose ball from Oakley Hanger’s free-kick.

And the game was put to bed as early as the 52nd minute, Scorey receiving the ball from Jackson and finding the top corner, via a deflection.

Jez Bedford almost added a fourth, his shot hitting the inside of the post, before Harry Baker was denied by goalkeeper Ross Casey.

Griffin did make it 4-0 in the closing stages, lofting a shot over the head of Casey and in.

Wimborne played out the closing stages with 10 men, captain Sam Roberts forced off injured with all subs already made.

But the Magpies dug in to preserve their clean sheet.

In Southern Premier, Poole Town’s home game against Plymouth Parkway was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.

Magpies: Flitney, Hanger (Munn, 81), Roberts, Walker, Jackson, Scorey, Neale (Carmichael, 72), Morgan, Griffin, Bedford, Lovell (Baker, 66).

Unused subs: Beale, Satterley.
